Oh the last few days have been no bueno! Bryan has been sick all week, but we never noticed any fever - just the usual cold symptoms. Luke started with fever on Wednesday and still had it on Thursday so I took him to the doctor. The doc checked him over and reported that his ears, throat, etc. looked great. Then he swabbed Luke's nose and said he was testing for the flu and would be back in about 12 minutes. Well, before we knew it the doctor was back in the room and this is how the conversation went:
doc: Well, looks like Luke has the flu.
me: Oh, no! (I am thinking the seasonal flu)
doc: There are two types of flu: Type A and Type B. Luke has Type A flu.
me: Ok...(I am still not making the connection)
doc: The only Type A flu in our community right now is the H1N1/Swine flu.
me: OMG! Luke has the SWINE FLU???
doc: It's really not that bad, then he started saying something that sounded like blah, blah, blah to me.
me: I'm sorry. I am going to have to stop you because I think I am going to cry and then probably freak out on you...
doc: Luke is going to be fine. Take some deep breaths...
Then the doctor explained that he has seen thousands of kids in his office with the H1N1 virus and that the media has really hyped up the entire thing. Too bad the only thing that I kept thinking about was the poor babies who I saw on the news that were in hospitals fighting for their lives! He said that in two or three days he would be back to normal. He prescribed Tami Flu for Luke and for me (as a preventative) and sent us on our way...
Oh, it was horrible! I got the worst sinking feeling in my stomach when the doctor said those words and started crying as soon as I got into my car. Bryan and I figured that Luke had some 48 hour bug or something and so he didn't go to the appointment with me, but how we both wish he would have been there! I really think Bryan probably had the flu which is why he was so sick and that maybe we just simply didn't realize he had fever. I got fever that evening after Luke's appointment and had it for about three days. One of the worst parts was that Luke didn't want to eat and he would vomit when I gave him his meds. Not just a little vomit either - I am talking projectile style all over me, him, and everything within a four foot radius. He even got Bryan once. He would still drink his formula, so I started putting his medicine in his milk which worked like a charm! Oh, and the fever! It was so hard to break his fever. Even his skin was pink. Thankfully, Luke would eat ice from Sonic and that is what kept him hydrated in between formula feedings.
So we Johnson's spent several days nursing each other back to health, drinking sweet ice tea from Sonic (and getting extra cups of ice for our little guy), and eating meals that Mimi brought over. It wasn't quite the weekend we had planned; but hey, at least now we don't have to worry anymore about catching the Swine flu!
