Campout in Luke's Room...Night 1

Warning: This is a really long post. I wanted to be able to remember this later...

Luke has been sleeping with Bryan and me in our bed for awhile now. Not ideal - I know. It all started back when he was waking up throughout the night, and after about the fourth or fifth time of getting up I would just put him in bed with us. That turned into putting him in bed with us from the beginning so I could have some energy the next day. This sounds like an excuse, but his crib is upstairs and our room is downstairs so it was really becoming difficult to get some real rest. We even slept in the guest bedroom for awhile, but he was waking up crying so often. None of that really matters I suppose as what we have now is a 10 month old (tomorrow!) who needs to sleep in his own comfortable crib.

Last night was night #1 of the transition. Bryan blew up our air mattress and put it in Luke's room so it would be a little easier for Luke. [Lately, Luke has been only taking one nap per day for about 1.5 - 2 hours and then going to sleep between 8 & 9 and waking up 12 hours later. This is really different than what he had been doing, which was taking several shorter naps per day and then going to bed between 10:30 - midnight. He would sleep about 8 or 9 hours and then be ready to go again.] Luke fell asleep around 8:45 and as soon as Bryan placed him in his crib, those eyes popped wide open! We thought if we had the t.v. on like we usually do in our room (Luke is used to going to sleep with noise), we could trick him into sleeping. NOT! We don't have a t.v. in Luke's room, so we hung the portable dvd player on the wall and popped in a Baby Einstein video. After an entire hour (that is two takes of the movie) it dawned on us that his movie was stimulating him and was accomplishing the exact opposite of what we had intended because he was still wide awake. So we started playing a movie that he could care less about and then he started holding on to his crib slats and moving himself back and forth as if he were in jail and saying, "let me out of here!" Then he started standing up in his crib and crying for us to get him out. Eventually, I got him out of his crib and rocked him to sleep in about two minutes. This time placing him in his crib was a success and he remained sleeping until about two hours later when he started crying...

Somewhere between getting up a couple of times to put Luke back to sleep, fighting with the air mattress, messing with the dvd player on the wall that was vibrating after the movie ended (I think the movie was re-loading or something), and trying to wake my soundly sleeping hubby who happened to be the closest to the crib, I caved and put Luke in bed with us. I just remember that he was sitting up in his crib with his arms up. I think it was about 5:00 a.m., but the truth is: I really can't be sure. I just know that I was tired and sore and had to catch some zzzz's. Ahhh, the same scenario only in a smaller room and on a much different bed!

I brought my camera in the room with us overnight with hopes of catching Luke's morning smiles from his crib. Instead, I caught his morning smiles up close:)

P.S. If anyone has any secrets to success with this sort of thing, please share! I am not a fan of the let him "cry it out" theory even though so many people say it works. I will try everything else first:)

Goodmorning Daddy!

Goodmorning Mommy! Isn't it a little early for the flash?

Luke, you are supposed to be sleeping in your crib:)
